We had the opportunity to interview Solène, a passionate jewelry student, to share her inspiring journey and her perspective on the importance of transmitting artisanal skills. Her experience provides valuable insight into the world of jewelry-making and the impact of projects like ours, which aim to highlight and preserve these unique crafts.

A Journey Driven by Passion

Solène tells us that her desire to study jewelry has always been present: "I have always been drawn to precision and meticulous work, to the stones I have been collecting since childhood, as well as to art and beautiful things in general. Jewelry-making represented the perfect combination of all these passions."

A decisive moment in her journey took place during her stay in Thailand, where she met a lapidary: "I visited him regularly, and each time, his eyes sparkled with wonder as he spoke about his passion and his stones. I told myself that I wanted to experience that same feeling one day." Before she left, this passionate artisan gifted her a stone, which remains one of the treasures in her collection. "I am sure he would be proud to know that it’s thanks to him that I now work in the same field, driven by the same passion and amazement for this craft."

This encounter profoundly influenced her career choice and helped her realize that behind every piece of jewelry lies a story, emotions, and invaluable expertise.

The Challenges and Joys of Creation

Discussing her training, Solène shares her fascination with the complexity of assembling jewelry: “Some pieces are so small that it’s hard to imagine how they can be put together. Yet, with absolute focus, the right tools, and a lot of patience, almost anything is possible.”

She also finds immense joy in stone setting, a step she describes as particularly rewarding because it brings creations to life. “Finishing a piece by setting the stone is like putting the final touch on a work of art. It’s the moment when everything comes together and makes sense.”

As for her professional aspirations, Solène dreams of having her own workshop in the countryside, where she can create freely, surrounded by the tranquility of a natural setting.

The Transmission of Skills

Solène was fortunate to work alongside a master jeweler, who was also a Meilleur Ouvrier de France (MOF) in goldsmithing. This prestigious title, awarded to the finest artisans in their craft, reflects the excellence and rarity of the skills this master passed on to her. “He taught me discipline, precision, attention to detail, and how to approach every technical challenge with optimism. Working alongside him was a unique and invaluable experience. His high standards and kindness pushed me to exceed my limits and improve every day.”

For Solène, the transmission of artisanal skills is vital because, as she explains, “These techniques, often passed down from generation to generation, are a living testament to history and cultural heritage. Machines, no matter how precise or efficient, will never be able to replicate the soul, passion, and individuality that an artisan brings to a creation.”

She emphasizes that these skills serve as a bridge between history and the present, deserving preservation to safeguard their richness and humanity.

A Call to Celebrate Artisans

As a student, Solène feels a strong sense of responsibility to become a vital “link” in the chain of passing on this craft. She dreams of one day welcoming an apprentice into her own workshop but already shares her creations through educational videos. “This not only allows me to exchange practical advice but also to inspire others and, who knows, spark a passion in those who might never have dared to take the leap. Artisanship deserves to be seen, appreciated, and understood.”

Solène wholeheartedly supports initiatives that highlight artisans and their skills: “Shining a light on these professions, which are often overlooked or underestimated, not only brings them the recognition they deserve but also shows that it’s possible to build a fulfilling career in a creative field. It inspires younger generations and encourages them to explore worlds they might never have considered.”

A Promising Future

To conclude, Solène encourages aspiring jewelers to follow their dreams: “Go for it! It’s the best job. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes—that’s the best way to learn and bounce back.”

Her enthusiasm, experience, and love for jewelry reflect not only the richness of this artistic trade but also the importance of preserving and passing on these skills so the magic can continue. Solène embodies the passion and promising future of a precious craft, where each creation tells a story and reflects the excellence of artisanal know-how.
